Students battle it out at Young World Quiz 2012
The Vijayawada Regional round of The Hindu Young World Quiz 2012 saw a close competition between city – based Narayana IIT Olympiad School and Teja Vidyalaya, Kodada ( Nalgonda Dist. ) with the city school team walking away with the top honours scoring 114 points in 24 rounds.
Commonwealth Chess Champion M.R. Lalith Babu congratulated the winning team D. Jeevithiesh and M. Prabhat ( both students of class IX ) from Narayana IIT Olympiad School, Moghalrajpuram branch and presented them two swanky bicycles and cash prize of 6,000 each. This team will travel to Chennai to participate in the national finals of the Quiz on 7th December, 2012.
The Father Devaiah Auditorium of Andhra Loyola College premises was abuzz with about 1,000 students from six districts clad in different uniforms clamouring to get their names registered and participate in the quiz.
An initiative of The Hindu Newspaper In Education programme, the day began with students participating in a written preliminary round from 2 p.m. Students from 101 schools in 366 teams descended upon the venue to take part in this prestigious quiz.
The quiz master V.V. Ramanan gave each team an answer – sheet to fill with 25 questions read out and put out on the screen. The preliminary round saw a wide range of questions to test the overall knowledge of the students’ right from science to movies to brand recognition and cartoon characters.
Once the students finished answers, the sheets were taken back for correction, and till the top six teams were identified based on the marks, the quiz master in a unique way began an interactive session with the kids, where he gave a chance to them to win special gifts for guessing the right answer. In this way all the 25 questions were discussed where the students enthusiastically participated and took home the special Tipsy Topsy packages. In the final round two teams from Teja Vidyalaya ( Kodad ), two teams from Narayana IIT Olympiad School, Vijayawada one from St. Paul’s and one from Nalanda Vidya Niketan were selected.
The final round was a on-stage live buzzer round where a picture was hidden behind a matrix and as the students answered different questions parts of the photo was revealed and the teams given a chance to win extra points for guessing the correct celebrity. The second place and cash prize of 8,000 went to the team, who called themselves Quiz Ka Nawabs, K. Abhignam and T. Brahmam from Teja Vidyalaya with a score of 92 points.
Tie – breaker
A tie – breaker question was used by the quizmaster to decide the third place which went along with a cash prize of 6,000 to M.S. Akash and P. Madhulika, the second team of Narayana IIT Olympiad School with a score of 82 while the team of Raghuveer and Himateja from Nalanda Vidya Nikethan took home the fourth place. The fifth place was awarded to ‘Quizzing Monsters’ S. Harshit Varma and B. Siva Shankar Reddy from St. Paul’s School while G. Sirisha and V.D. Reddy from Teja Vidyalaya got the sixth place. Participation certificates were given to all the students on this occasion.
The Hindu Young World Quiz to be conducted on 28th November, 2012
The 13th edition of the popular The Hindu Young World Quiz Competition, a part of the The Hindu – NIE Initiative will be held at the Hari Hara Kala Bhavan here between 12 noon and 3 p.m. on 28th November, 2012.
It is open to students from Class VII to IX and participants should report at 11.15 a.m. Apart from registered schools, spot registrations are also available and students of schools opting for this facility should reach the venue earlier to complete the formalities.
Preliminary Round :
There will be a written preliminary round to select the six teams for the regional finals and the quiz master will explain the rules.
This year, an online quiz presented by Britannia Milk Bikis Future Minds for students from Class IV to Class IX. The students can register and participate in the online quiz ( log on to www.thehindu.com/ywq ) and win Apple iPads and HCL tablet.
The sponsors for the event managed by I ads & Events apart from Britannia are Indian Overseas Bank, VIT University, Firefox, Goldwinner and Black Thunder, Success Notebooks, Reynolds Pens and S Mart, Wild Craft and Real Fruit Juice.

Prize money :
The winning teams from each region will qualify for the Grand Finale at Chennai. They will get trophies and certificates from The Hindu , apart from cash prizes of 12,000, 8,000 and 6,000 for the winner, first and second runner – up, respectively, and more gifts from the sponsors.
In the case of outstation teams that qualify for the Grand Finale at Chennai and for one accompanying parent or teacher, the cost of travel, boarding and lodging will be borne by the organisers.
The prize money for the Grand Finale is 50,000, 40,000 and 30,000 for the first, second and third – placed teams.
The Hindu Young World Quiz to be conducted on 21st November, 2012
The Hindu Young World Quiz will be held at the Tagore Centenary Hall here on 22nd November, 2012.
The event will start at 11.30 a.m. The participants will have to report for registration at 9.30 a.m. The competition is open to students from classes 7 to 9. Spot registration can be done at the venue. However, students should produce bona fide certificates from their institutions. A school can send a maximum of four teams consisting of two students each. The Hindu Young World Quiz is an integral part of the Newspaper in Education initiative of The Hindu aimed at attracting talented young minds. There will be a written preliminary round to select the six teams for the regional finals. The regional winners will get trophies and certificates from The Hindu, a cash prize of 12,000, and gifts from various sponsors. The first runner – up will receive a cash prize of 8,000 and the second runner – up, 6,000 as well as trophies and certificates.
Certificates will be presented to all participants. There will be prizes for the audience, too. The regional winners of the 16 centres will compete in the finals to be held in Chennai on 7th December, 2012. The Hindu will bear their travel and accommodation expenses, including that of one parent or guardian per team.
The winners of the finals will receive 50,000, while the runner – up will get 40,000. The team which comes third will get 30,000. There will be an online quiz presented by Britannia Milk Bikis Future Minds for students from classes 4 to 9. The prizes for the online quiz will be Apple iPads and HCL tablet.
