There were also 79,111 Backward Classes students, 7,630 Backward Classes-Muslim students, 39,710 Most Backward Classes students, 20,109 Scheduled Castes students, 2,173 from the Arunthathiyar community and 523 students belonging to Scheduled Tribes.
While over 78,000 applications had been received from first generation students, officials said the effect of lowering the eligibility marks had resulted in 4,800 more students applying this year. The results are available at the website www.annauniv.edu/tnea2010.
Responding to a question, Mr. Ponmudy said the counselling process would proceed on schedule. He had appealed to the associations, which had a case pending before the Madras High Court in the matter of following the latest All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) guidelines. The government would try its best to make sure students were not affected.
He said Anna University-Madurai would start functioning soon and a vice-chancellor would be appointed shortly. On the issue of vice-chancellor for Anna University-Tiruchi, he said the search committee was yet to finalise a name.
