Two Girls make it to Top 10 in Engineering Merit List

Of the first 11 ranks in the State engineering admissions merit list for 2010, three belong to Most Backward Classes and eight to Backward Classes, including a Backward Classes-Muslim student. They scored a perfect 200 out of 200 along with 18 other students in the State.

Releasing the list on Friday at Anna University-Chennai, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy said there were two girls and eight boys among the top 10. The highest ranker among Scheduled Castes was ranked 47 in the overall list, the topper among Scheduled Castes - Arunthathiyar was ranked 237 overall, and the topper in the list for students belonging to the Scheduled Tribes was ranked 5,025 overall.

In all, 1,62,506 applicants had been found eligible among the total of 1,67,406. Of the 4,900 forms which were rejected, 4,838 were from regular candidates and 62 from vocational stream candidates. In all, 64,629 female students figured in the final merit list along with 97,877 male students.

There were also 79,111 Backward Classes students, 7,630 Backward Classes-Muslim students, 39,710 Most Backward Classes students, 20,109 Scheduled Castes students, 2,173 from the Arunthathiyar community and 523 students belonging to Scheduled Tribes.

While over 78,000 applications had been received from first generation students, officials said the effect of lowering the eligibility marks had resulted in 4,800 more students applying this year. The results are available at the website www.annauniv.edu/tnea2010.

Responding to a question, Mr. Ponmudy said the counselling process would proceed on schedule. He had appealed to the associations, which had a case pending before the Madras High Court in the matter of following the latest All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) guidelines. The government would try its best to make sure students were not affected.

He said Anna University-Madurai would start functioning soon and a vice-chancellor would be appointed shortly. On the issue of vice-chancellor for Anna University-Tiruchi, he said the search committee was yet to finalise a name.
