"Merit is what counts and there are enough opportunities in the country for meritorious students. Blaming discrimination does not serve any purpose", said 2010 IAS topper Shah Faesal, on Tuesday.

Addressing a seminar "Dream Big" organised by MS Education Academy at a private function hall here, Mr. Faesal, the Kashmiri doctor, advised students to create and cultivate abilities for maintaining a meritorious career.

Most students, particularly from minority community give way citing three problems - pessimism about opportunity, being defeated and give lame excuses for failures.

Minority community constitutes about 13 per cent population in the country but the number of students taking civil services examinations is mere two per cent, he pointed out.

Facilities for Students

"If a student is meritorious no one can discriminate him or her of an opportunity. Our constitution provides enough rights. Andhra Pradesh provides students with enough facilities and the onus was on students to make best use of them," said Mr. Faesal.

Students should analyse their strengths and weakness and work accordingly. Cracking civil services is not tough, even an average student can crack it, provided he is willing to work hard and dedicate enough time for preparation, he advised.

Mr. Faesal suggested parents to identify potential in their children and support them in the field desired by them to make a career.

City Police Commissioner A.K. Khan, who was chief guest, exhorted students not to depend on reservation for admissions but to believe in their own ability.

"If one wants to serve the society, then public service is the right platform. No where in the world minorities enjoy such freedom as provided in the country," affirmed Mr. Khan.
