Professional Courses Merit List to be publicized by CENTAC

Students who have applied for engineering and medical courses in Puducherry can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

After a prolonged delay, the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) released the merit list for counselling for the professional courses on Monday evening, signalling the resumption of the admission process.

CENTAC sources told that following the release of merit list, the first phase of counselling for the medical courses is expected to begin on 26th July, 2010 and will end on 31st July, 2010.

The first phase of counselling for engineering courses will begin on 2nd August, 2010. The dates for subsequent phases are yet to be decided.

The committee received 5,698 applications for the engineering courses from candidates in both the Union Territory of Puducherry and other States. Out of these, 525 applications were rejected.

In total, 5,173 candidates will participate in the counselling for 2,168 seats in two government and nine private engineering colleges. Two private engineering colleges are still awaiting affiliation from the Pondicherry University.

For medical courses, 4,261 applications have been received from candidates from the Union Territory and other States. This includes applications for both MBBS and B. Pharma.

Medical seats

The number of medical seats available for students has come down this year from 261 to 212 following the denial of permission for Sri Venkateswara Medical College and Research Centre to admit students by the Medical Council of India.

Also, the newly built Government Medical College, which was expected to provide 100 medical seats for the students this year, has been denied recognition by the MCI.

On the reservation policy to be followed for the counselling this year, a CENTAC official said that a verdict on the case filed against regional reservations at the Madras High Court is expected on Wednesday. A decision will be taken after the verdict.

The students are expected to bring all necessary documents for the counselling sessions along with the Demand Draft of Rs. 600.

Those students who have taken admissions for courses in other colleges are expected to bring a letter of proof from the concerned institution. They would have to submit the original documents at a later date.

Counselling dates for the differently - abled candidates is yet to be decided. The committee is expecting to complete the entire admission process by third week of August.
