For Poor Students who have the desire to Study

Students who have scored high marks are not admitted to this school. But those who have passed their Class VII examination with minimum marks are given priority.

Mahatma Gandhi Residential School, which was opened recently in Chickballapur, is a unique institution that provides free education to students who have not been able to continue their studies owing to social and economic reasons.

The only criterion for admission is the pupil's urge to study. Those who have dropped out after Class VII and those who have scored just 35 per cent marks are given preference, says Chickballapur MP and Union Minister for Law and Justice M. Veerappa Moily, who has established the school.

The school is run by the Karkala - based Kissan Sabha Trust headed by Mr. Moily. Students of the Mahatma Gandhi Residential School are provided free food, boarding, clothes, shoes and books.

"We will go to villages, identify such students who have an urge to study, but have discontinued their studies owing to social and economic reasons, and get them admitted to the school," Mr. Moily said.

Thirty - seven boys have been admitted to Class VIII and the trust plans to start a separate residential school for such girls from the next academic year. The admission, however, is limited to students from Yelahanka, Doddaballapur, Hoskote, Nelamangala, Gauribidanur, Bagepalli and Chickballapur Assembly segments in Mr. Moily's Chickballapur constituency.

The Mahatma Gandhi Residential School that was set up in Karkala 15 years ago has grown into a model institution. Every year students are passing the SSLC examination by scoring 85 per cent and above.

"Our aim is to ensure that students of the Chickballapur school also pass the SSLC examination with distinction. I will personally monitor the progress of students every fortnight," Mr. Moily said after inaugurating the school recently.
