New Rule on providing Scholarships may affect the Students badly

Thousands of school and college students may be deprived of scholarships owing to a change in the rules.

The changed rule makes it compulsory for students eligible for scholarships to have a bank account. Students are finding it difficult to comply with this rule.

Children of beedi workers are entitled to scholarships for schooling as well as for college education and diplomas.

Around 60,000 children are expected to apply for this scholarship this year, according to Sukumar, secretary of the South Kanara Beedi Workers Federation.

The Beedi Workers Welfare Board issued a circular in September last stating that accounts should be opened in nationalised banks in the names of the beneficiaries so that the amount could be deposited directly into their accounts, Mr. Sukumar said.

The last date for completing the process is 31st August, 2010, and Rs. 15 crore has been sanctioned for this purpose, Mr. Sukumar said.

Parents have been rushing to banks to get accounts opened in their children's names but are being turned away as sufficient forms are not available for the purpose, he said.

Uday Kumar Holla, Lead District Manager (Syndicate Bank is the lead bank for Dakshina Kannada) said that nationalised banks in the district were accepting a limited number of forms as they were "not ready" to handle the huge influx of applications.
