National Seminar at Periyar Maniammai University

India is rich in traditional knowledge, particularly in the field of medicine, but that knowledge lacks scientific validation, said K.Kathiresan, Faculty of Marine Science, Annamalai University, here on Thursday.

Inaugurating a national seminar on 'Plants and human health - Genomera 2010' at Periyar Maniammai University, Mr.Kathiresan said traditional knowledge of India should be documented and given scientific validation by the engineering students who study biotechnology.

India is a land of medicinal plants. Our old texts indicated the presence of nearly 500 medicinal plants. At present there are 45,000 plant species in India. Indian Ayurveda is the earliest school of medicine. Sushrutha was the father of surgery in India.

Sale of herbal medicine in India in a year is to the tune of one billion US dollars. But compared to Europe, it is less. Europe's sale is of ten billion dollars and that of United States is four billion dollars.

Mr.Kathiresan said that 80 per cent of the world population depended on herbal medicines. There are two million medical practitioners in India.

The Central Government has formed a National Medicinal Plant Board at the national level and has also constituted state level boards to monitor and co - ordinate herbal formulations.

Factors like climate change and global warming is creating new types of diseases. New drug resistant malarial parasites have been identified. He released a souvenir 'Genomera - 10' on the occasion. N.Ramachandran, Vice - Chancellor, PMU, appealed to the students to work towards patents.
