Joyous Atmosphere on OU Campus

The Osmania University campus - nerve centre of the pro - Telangana agitation by students - erupted in joy on Friday as the bypoll results and leads were announced.

The joy of students, who vowed to support all the 12 MLAs after they resigned seeking separate Telangana, knew no bounds as all of them registered massive leads over their rivals.

Most of the students were tense on the outcome of the bypolls in 12 Assembly constituencies as speculation was high that people's opinion might tilt towards Congress candidate and PCC president, D. Srinivas, in Nizamabad urban constituency.

Members of several student organisations campaigned in that constituency for BJP candidate, Y. Laxminarayana, who earlier won the seat but resigned along with 11 TRS MLAs.

As scrolls ran on TV news channels that the BJP nominee in Nizamabad and TRS candidates in the other 11 Assembly segments were leading, boisterous celebrations began on the campus with students rushing to Arts College.

Hundreds of students took out a victory rally from NCC gate to Arts College raising slogans in support of Telangana.

They burst fire crackers and distributed sweets to passers - by and motorists.

Students of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and Telangana Rashtra Students Vibhag organised a motorcycle rally.

Addressing the gathering, OU JAC leader P. Kailash Neta said that people in the region gave a fitting reply to parties opposing statehood for Telangana.

"It's a clear mandate in support of Telangana," he said, adding that Congress MPs should now exert pressure on the Central Government to pass a Bill in Parliament supporting statehood for the region.

Plans have been chalked out in coordination with student union leaders from other universities to launch an agitation on Babli project and other issues confronting the region, he added.
