Memorandum submitted to Iqbal Singh.

A number of organisations, including NGOs and student federations, took out a rally from Bharathidasan Government College for Women and staged a demonstration in front of the Head Post Office on Ranga Pillai Street on Wednesday.

Later, they submitted a memorandum to Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh seeking his intervention in various issues pertaining to students.

The memorandum requested immediate action to protect the interest of students.

It contained demands including strict implementation of guidelines by National Child Rights Protection Commission banning corporal punishments in schools and colleges.

It also requested the immediate release of merit list and counselling date for engineering and biology based courses through the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) and steps to run the Government Medical College in a full - fledged manner by getting recognition from the Medical Council of India and start various courses from this academic year itself.

It also requested the Mr. Singh's intervention in the issue of "private schools in Puducherry collecting enormous fees for admitting students without any norms" and sought legislation on the lines of the law enacted in Tamil Nadu to regulate school fee structure.

It also wanted the government to take steps to get back the recognition for the Government Law College from the Bar Council of India.
