Government Colleges to have Psychotherapy Counsellors

Government Colleges to have Psychotherapy Counsellors

While school education may be easy to get through with parental support, higher education is a different story altogether as students cope with teen pressure and are exposed to a new environment. They must also deal with their personality as college prepares them for adulthood.

For many students a guiding hand that could help them in this intimidating transition could be most welcome.

The State government has come forward to serve this need. Initially, a group of its colleges will have a counsellor whose help can be sought.

The colleges will have psychotherapists who will help the students meet the challenges of the new phase of their life.

Higher Education Secretary K. Ganesan said, "When colleges reopen, there will be counsellors who will help the students face the first year. Such counselling will help during examination time also."

The Higher Education Department has sought help from the Association of Psychotherapists to appoint a person to conduct the counselling.

"A group of government colleges would use their services depending on their availability and student requirement," he said.

To meet the increasing demands, the Tamil Nadu Open University offers a master's degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy through distance mode. Students are provided practical training also.

The course is offered in five centres - Chennai, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Madurai. The university charges an annual fee of Rs. 7,000 and classes are conducted for 21 days in a year. A month-long internship is offered in educational institutions, industries or hospitals treating mental illnesses.

"Students receive practical exposure and learn to diagnose and treat various disorders during their visit to mental hospitals," says psychotherapist G. Rajamohan who conducts classes at the Santosh Hospital and Research Institute in Besant Nagar.
