The Commotion against Semester System deepened

Responding to a call from the Delhi University Teachers' Association, the Staff Associations of a number of DU colleges met on Friday and decided to press the DUTA to intensify its struggle against the manner of implementation of the semester system.

A DUTA executive member and Assistant Professor of English at Kirori Mal College, Rudrashish Chakraborty said : "The Kirori Mal College Staff Association discussed at length the twin issues of the semester system at the undergraduate level and also the UGC notification of 28th June, 2010."

"The Staff Association unanimously passed a resolution urging the DUTA to intensify its action programmes against these anti - teacher and anti - academic designs of the Government and the university authorities.

The action programme will include demonstrations, dharnas, fixed periods of strikes and if required, indefinite strike.

The teachers decided to continue with the old annual system of teaching and timetable as that is the only sanctioned mode of teaching according to the university guidelines," he added.

Dyal Singh College Assistant Professor in the Hindi department Rajiv Kumar Kavar said : "The Staff Association of our college will suggest to the DUTA that we should boycott classes for a week. If the semester system issue is not resolved, we can consider going on further strike."

The Hindu College Staff Association too placed its weight behind DUTA and urged it to intensify its action programmes in the context of the semester system.

Academic Council member Dr. Abha Dev Habib said : "Colleges normally have their open day on 16th July, 2010. This year colleges will not re - open before 21st July, 2010. The Vice - Chancellor used his emergency powers to pass the calendar and even the semester system.

No discussions happened in the AC or the Executive Council."

She said the students too are not happy with the semester system.
