Arts, Science Courses CAPASC Counselling commences

6,000 candidates have applied for 1,926 seats in six colleges.

The counselling for arts and science courses at two government colleges and four aided society - run government colleges in the Puducherry region through Centralised Procedures for Arts and Science Courses (CAPASC) began on Wednesday.

This is the first time a counselling process has been adopted in the Union Territory for admissions to arts and science courses.

According to a release, Puducherry is the only place after Delhi to adopt a centralised admission process for admission to arts and science courses. Around 6,000 candidates have applied for 1,926 seats available in six colleges. The first session of counselling would end on 17th July, 2010 and 700 students would attend it.

The procedure has not been extended to colleges in Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam.

Inaugurating the first session of the counselling, Minister for Public works M.O.H.F Shahjahan, who also holds the Collegiate Education portfolio, said that during the visit of Union Minister for Human Resource Kapil Sibal to Karaikal, a proposal to establish new women's arts colleges and polytechnic institutes was put forward by the Puducherry government.

Mr. Shahjahan said that there is a proposal to start 'finishing schools', where students would learn "soft skills" and language skills to help them become employable. Though most students are well qualified to take up jobs, the lack of English speaking ability is affecting their chances to find a job of their choice.

Such finishing schools, he said, would be started with private partnership, Mr. Shahjahan said.

There is also a proposal to start an international language lab at Puducherry to help students learn foreign languages. There is a huge demand for translators across the world and such an institution would help students tap this potential, Mr. Shahjahan said.
