Mr. Sundararaman explains : for example, the evaluation in Tamil will test students' ability to listen, speak, read and write.
Teachers themselves will carry out the assessment and record the progress. "The purpose is not to rank or compare performances."
"And if needed, the assessment result will also be shared with parents for developing the child," he adds.
Sources in School Education Department, Coimbatore, say the Government chose the district because the SSA scheme has been going on for the past three years with considerable success.
"It is one of the districts in the forefront of implementing the project." Mr. Venkatesan says the National Council for Education, Research and Training (NCERT) has asked for the evaluation and the State Government will submit the report to it.
To carry out the evaluation exercise, the Education Department is now training resources persons, who will in turn train the teachers. The exercise is expected to begin before the end of this month.
