A Token fast by Law College Students

About 60 students of the Government Law College, Vellore went on a one - day token fast on Monday demanding withdrawal of the proposal to conduct a qualification test for enrolment in the Bar Council.

C. Arunkumar, a final year law student at the college, said last month Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily and the president of Bar Council of India had said that all law students in the country will have to appear for the qualification test on completion of the degree to enrol as members in the Bar Council.

"This test will be held once in six months. Once the graduate passes the test, he / she can enrol in the Bar Council and take up practice.

But this will pose difficulties for students from rural and backward areas as they will have only academic knowledge and not practical update of the field," he said.

But the case was not so for students in private law schools and colleges of excellence run by universities as they have good exposure during the study period itself, he observed.

"We want the proposal to conduct the qualification test to be withdrawn. There is a meeting of the Bar Council of India on 31st July, 2010 in which presidents of all State bar councils are attending to discuss the issue. We will wait and see if a solution is being arrived at the meeting," he added.

The students have been staging various protests since last Monday including demonstration and road roko demanding withdrawal of the proposal.
