Tiruchi: Bharathidasan University plans to start a five-year Integrated degree programme from the coming academic year for admitting talented 10th passed students. The university will provide the students a monthly scholarship of Rs.5, 000.
The Standing Committee on Academic Affairs, in its Friday meeting, approved the unique programme leading to B. Sc. (Hons.) in Integrated Science. The Vice-Chancellor, C. Thangamuthu, said that the university would pay the special science scholarship to students with funds mobilized from the Department of Science and Technology industries, besides its own.
The programme, envisaging a paradigm shift in teaching-learning methodologies, would encompass a research-focussed understanding of all the branches of science such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science and Environmental Science. The uniform system in vogue was examination-oriented and did not suit promotion of research-oriented integrated degree programme would be offered through the St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchi, to begin with. The services of most distinguished professors and teachers, including retired faculty members from universities and colleges, would be availed for the programme.
Upon completion, these students would be eligible to join straightaway the give year integrated Ph. D. programme, blending course work of postgraduate programme and research thesis.
B.Sc. students under the conventional pattern would also be eligible to pursue the five-year integrated Ph.D. programme under provide Rs.2, 000 a month to a student in addition to government scholarships.
