Tamil Nadu Agricultural University to Become Nation’s First E-varsity

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University to Become Nation’s First E-varsity

Indian Council of Agricultural Research has recognized this mammoth endeavour.

The three-year effort of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University to shift from the conventional method of teaching to e-learning has borne rich dividends. The university will adopt the e-learning classroom teaching system from 2007-*08, said to be the first of its kind in the country.

The university has systematically developed e-content over the last three years for nearly 600 undergraduate courses, 29 postgraduate courses and 23 doctoral programmes. The highlight of the content development is that it has been the sole effort of the faculty of the university, without the aid of any outsourcing agency or consultancy.

Vice-Chancellor C. Ramasamy said: “The e-learning material of all courses will be available not only to the students of the TNAU, but also to its affiliated colleges, 42 State agricultural universities. The faculty of the university who have received training to develop web notes successively posted the material on the website of the university http://www.tnau.ac.in

Fund Sanctioned:

The brainchild of the Vice Chancellor, the effort had so far been a totally in-house affair. But now the Indian Council of Agricultural Research has recognized this mammoth endeavour. It has identified TNAU as the nodal university in the country for development of web lessons and sanctioned Rs. 1.6 crore under the National Agricultural Innovation Project.

As an outcome of this, the Vice Chancellor inaugurated a swanky new e-learning laboratory in the university on Saturday in the presence of the Deans of various departments and principals of agricultural colleges in the State.

Furnished at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh, the laboratory would be used for strengthening the process of creating web lessons and also for training teachers on effective e-learning teaching.

It also has a video conferencing facility. To begin with the e-courseware of B.Sc (Agriculture) will be made available to the State and Central agricultural universities through the centralized national server.

Inspired by the system that was used at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Massachusetts, the university has successfully developed its e-courseware indigenously in the domain of agricultural education, as a response to the new transitions taking place in information technology.
