Erode: “The Finance Ministry plans to grant at least Rs. 30,000 crore as education loan to students throughout the country so that more and more will go for higher education,” said the Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram at Kongu Arts and Science College, Nanjanapauram, on Saturday. Mr. Chidambaram was distributing education loan to students.

March 31, 2004 Rs. 4,000 crore was granted as education loan in the country and till March 31 this year Rs. 13,000 crore was granted. “I commend banks for this, but still it is not enough. More should be given as education loan,” Mr. Chidambaram said. He said from June to August more students would apply for the loan.
The banks should grant loans liberally. Mr. Chidambaram said: “I will visit every district in Tamil Nadu and other places and monitor the loan advancement to students. Banks should devote their attention on lending education loan to all needy students.” He said in India socially backward were also educationally backward. It was the aim of the Government to uplift the socially backward people.
Mr. Chidambaram stressed the importance of research-oriented education. He said in India very few took to research in science and technology. He wanted students to involve in research.
Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshi Jagadeesan said E.V.R. Periyar was instrumental in giving women education and because of his efforts the downtrodden and the socially backward were educated. Ms. Jagadeesan said her ministry was granting good funds for the uplift of socially backward women.
Erode District Collector T. Udhaychandran said 239 students were granted Rs. 4,98,57,620 as education loan. Mr. Udhaychandran said a special drive on education loan would begin soon and wanted banks to grant loans to students liberally. Kongu Arts and Science College Principal C. Swaminathan, president of KVIT Trust M. Murugesan, lead district manager J. Vanangamudi and others spoke.
Later when the Finance Minister went to Vellalar College for Women to attend the felicitation programme for industrialist N. Mahalingam, about 20 students from Komarapalayam met him and complained that the banks at Komarapalayam were refusing them education loan. Mr Chidambaram wanted them to approach Ms Jagaeesan. Ms Jagadesan said she would arrange for the loan.
