The Indira Gandhi National Open University has designed an education plan for Muslim women, which will be implemented through ‘madarasas’ in various districts.
Through its Madurai Regional Centre that covers 16 districts, the university has formulated the programme which it will launch in July along with Muslim-run colleges.
The plan is in tune with the recommendations of the Sachar Committee that went into the socio-economic status of the Muslims.
K. Panneerselvam, Regional Director, IGNOU, told The Hindu here on Friday that discussions were on to implement skill development programmes for women, and the places that had high concentration of Muslim women were identified.
The first phase of the initiative would cover Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchi, Tirunelveli and Thanjavur districts.
