Bharathiar University - 25 Years of Yeoman Service to Students
Coimbatore: Enshrined with the motto ‘Educate to Elevate’, Bharathiar University has been striving to be a centre of excellence.
From 1982, the university, situated at the foothills of the Maruthamalai on a sprawling 1, 000-acre campus, has come a long way with many achievements to its credit.
Educational Needs
In its silver jubilee year, the university has 119 affiliated institutions that cater to the educational needs of nearly 1, 68,000 students.
The varsity has an active School of Distance Education that provides graduate, post-graduate, diploma and post diploma courses.
The Academic Staff College that was established in 1987 has been instrumental in providing orientation to teachers in different parts of India.
Facilities
The library with 1,20,000 volumes, the Counselling Centre, Health Centre, University Science Instrumentation Centre, Statistical Centre and a Women Harassment Centre on the university premises provide the students with the right ambience to pursue higher education.
The varsity has established on its premises a Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences in association with the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
The focus of the centre has been carry out research and development activities in the life sciences, aimed mainly at meeting the needs of the Indian Defence sector.
The seven-year association has thus far resulted in 12 projects of the DRDO being successfully executed.
Under the initiative of G.Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor, the varsity will shortly have nanotechnology centre to conduct full-fledge degree courses in nanotechnology, a digital library, a 1,000-seater-air-conditioned auditorium, a state-of-the-art hostel for international students, and an indoor stadium, besides a students amenities centre. Besides this, there is also a proposal to revamp of curriculum to make it Industry-oriented.
