Coimbatore: The Bharathiar University (BU) has formed a three-member committee to study and recommend names for the technology-related courses that the varsity and its affiliated colleges could start.
This comes in a wake of the university’s decision to sanction technology courses for arts and science colleges, provided they have required infrastructure.
The committee, headed by former Vice-Chancellor A. Subramaniam, will also analyze the legal implications involved in running the technology courses in arts and science colleges.
Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said recently that if the arts and science colleges had the required facilities, they could also offer technology-related courses.
According to him, if engineering colleges can offer arts and science colleges cannot offer engineering courses. “There are many arts and science colleges which have better infrastructure to run certain technology courses,” he observed.
Courses like computer technology could be started by the arts and science colleges, he said adding that the committee would come out with its finding soon.
The varsity has formed another committee to study the possibility of merging a few departments which do not have enough students. In fact, there are no takers for certain courses in the varsity.
This committee will also study the possibility of introducing some intensified courses, creation of new departments and establishment of ‘school concept’ in the varsity.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the school of management would be inter-disciplinary in nature and the courses would be more focused. Each school would have four departments.
Also, the varsity has given provision for the conversion of the courses, which do not have takers.
“In this case, the colleges need not pay affiliation fees and endowment fees but An one-time payment of Rs.25, 000 will do,” the V-C Stated.
The varsity has also granted permission to start 40 colleges in the coming academic year.
It has also emphasized that all the colleges must have a fully equipped language lab with qualified teachers, At present, out of the 118 affiliated colleges, only 37 colleges have language labs.
