Anna University Coimbatore framing fresh Syllabus for Engineering Colleges

Coimbatore, Feb 12: The Anna University (AU), Coimbatore, is framing fresh syllabus for engineering colleges in Coimbatore Zone to ‘fill the gap between industry and academic institutions’ this academic year.

The announcement came from the Vice-Chancellor of the AU, Coimbatore, Prof R. Radhakrishnan, during his first press conference after assuming charge, here today at the Government College of Technology (GCT).

The Anna University (AU) has been recently trifurcated with headquarters in Chennai, Coimbatore and Tiruchy. Ten districts come under this Zone including Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Kannur, Dindugul and Theni. Temporarily, the varsity functions in the GCT premises.

“The syllabus aims at filling the huge gap between industry and academic institutions, which makes the students employable,: the new V-C said.

“Many students are unable to face difficult situations in life. They are not able to tackle depression at workspot and at times, we have suffered mental illness also,” he noted.

The syllabus would take this fact into consideration. To achieve this, industry people would be included in the academic council of the varsity.

Patenting: The V-C said though may innovations come up in the field of engineering, it is pathetic they are not being patented. In this connection, would set up a Centre for Intellectual Property Rights, which would patent the findings.

Focus on Research: Students would be encouraged to take up high standard research.

"This will help in solving the problem of staff shortage in self-financing engineering colleges in the Coimbatore Zone,” he said.

Moreover, the varsity is also planning to introduce correspondence courses.

Raising Standards: The V-C insisted on obtaining accreditation for all the engineering colleges under the Coimbatore Zone of the AU. The standard of every college would be raised to the national level and those that already have the national standard would be encourage to obtain international recognition, he added.
