Every year we observe Earth Day on. April 22. Each year on this day millions of people throughout the world gather to clean up litter, to protest against threats to the environment, and to celebrate progress in reducing pollution. Is that enough to protect and preserve the environment, which took more than 2.4 billion years to come into present shape.

The issues involved in preservation and protection of the environment span to a large extent. It needs specialized discipline is known variously as Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Ecological Sciences, etc. Environmental Science is the study of environmental problems, especially those created by pollution. Environmentalist is a person who is concerned with problems of the environment and especially with the effects of uncontrolled pollution on the Earth's atmosphere.

Environmental Science consists of a correlate sequence that is structured to allow students to enhance their knowledge in Environmental Science, to provide them with a solid foundation with which to pursue Environmental Science in the future, and to expose them to current issues in Environmental Science and public policy.

Last century, particularly last few decades, saw tremendous strain on air, water, forests and other natural resources. Measured have been initiated to address the problem. One way to address this problem has been identified as environmental education, which first got mention at the Stockholm Conference on Environmental Education, held in Tbillisi, Georgia Republic, in 1977, laid down some guiding principles that were adopted to design environment education programmes in several countries including India.

In the 1980s specific environment related courses started being introduced in Indian universities, many of which also established separate departments for this purpose. Over the years these courses have expanded in content and volume.

Environmental science courses are holistic and multi-disciplinary in nature. They require not only in-depth knowledge of Environmental Sciences but also a number of other traits by candidates to excel in his/her field. The aspirant should have a her field. The aspirant should have a her field. The aspirant should have a strong inclination towards building a career in environmental advocacy and organizing and a strong interest in environmental and/or public health issues. The aspirant should be self-starter and should have the ability to lead the team.
