Playing sports at the school or college level need no longer be a mere hobby but can actually open professional avenues.

Realising the importance of sports and a physical education as a viable career, many universities have introduced Physical Education courses in the past few years.

Physical Education is an integral part of the total education process. India has a great tradition in physical education as a means of ensuring physical development, martial valour and recreational competence and the Indian system of exercises include a variety of physical activities such as dands, haithaks, nanwskars, yogicasanas, etc, which formed the integral part of physical education such as Kho – Kho and Kabbadi now promoted as National Games.

Career as a coach or a physical education instructor is the main option in the field. Their job entails selecting potential players and then teaching them the rules of the game, demonstrate various techniques, ways to plan a game and devise strategy. They also observe players and offer them guidance and helpful criticism. They accompany players for competitions and motivate them so as to bring out the best in them.

Pursuing an additional post – graduate diploma in physical training can enable one to find expert jobs as physiotherapists or lecturers at a university) both in India and abroad. One can also join one of the many health centres that are opening in clubs and hotels as fitness experts and have a respectable job and a handsome pay package. Experienced coaches are in great demand at all the training centres set up by SAI and by state and central sports bodies. Besides sports clubs, schools and colleges, they can also work as in – house coaches for corporate sports teams.

Physical Education Courses :

Physical Education is offered as a discipline in many colleges and universities. The subject comprises both theoretical and practical aspects.

Hence the job of a Physical Education Instructor entails classroom teaching as well as imparting physical training. Many colleges, universities and other institutes are now offering various physical education courses such as Bachelor in Physical Education ( BPEd ), Masters in Physical Education ( MPEd ), Certificate in Physical Education ( CPEd ) and Diploma in Physical Education ( DPEd ). Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports Sciences ( IGIPESS ) is one of the leading institutions under the Faculty of Education, University of Delhi, offering all the categories of teacher training courses in physical education.

Established in 1987 by the Delhi Administration, IGIPESS offers BPEd and MPEd courses recognised by National Council of Teacher Education.  Osmania University, which produced cricketers like ML Jaisimha and Mohammed Azharud – din as well as renowned sports broadcaster Harsha Bhogle, offers physical education courses in both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Similar courses are also available in Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education ( LNIPE ), Gwalior.

Kolkata, Bangalore and Kerala universities also have such courses. As there is a need for proper training and guidance to aspiring physical education students, UGC is promoting physical education and sports science as a subject in various universities.

Adventure Sports :

Recently more and more companies are investing in adventure sports, thanks to the booming tourism sector. Adventure sports have now become apart of corporate training. There area Lot of resorts and hotels investing in adventure sports to attract tourists. So a degree in adventure sports will always come handy for a job in this sector. LNIPE ( Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, Gwalior ), run by the Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry, also offers an adventure sports course which will help people gain international assignments.
