When it comes to taking a decision about career building every one looks into the future scope of different options and prospect underlying them.

Now – a – days there are innumerable career options, like Engineering Analyst / Technocracy, Information Technology (IT), Medicine, Management, Research, Civil Services, Chartered & Cost Accountancy and so on besides a lot more.

The hotel industry is growing over 24% annually and to keep pace with this unprecedented growth, in the next 5 years the additional requirement of the rooms in the 3 to 5 star hotel segment would be around 1,50,000.

To meet the demand of servicing these additional rooms, there would be a requirement for at least 3,00,000 strong work force.

Hotels are amongst the most visible and important infrastructure requirement for economic development of a country.

With the rapid economic growth of our country, hospitality industry is also skyrocketing like never before. Realising its importance our government has given this sector a priority infrastructure industry status.

The liberalisation policy of the government has given a great fillip to the national and international hotel chains to commission and run hotel chains in our country.

Prominent amongst them are Oberoi, ITC – Welcome group, Hyatt, Hilton, Quality Inn, Best Western, Carlson, Holiday Inn, Kenilworth, Park, Radisson, Taj Group of Hotels, etc.

Major infrastructure companies like DLF, Unitech, Parsvnath and ECT have also entered the hotel industry business in large scale. Tourism industry is one of the largest foreign exchange earners of our country.

The tourist arrivals in our country are growing steadily around 7 – 8% per year and in the next 5 – 10 Years the proposed investment in this sector would be around $50 billion.

So far, India has been attracting much less foreign tourists in comparison to other Asian countries like China, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, etc.

Since the Government has taken some positive steps to attract tourists, consequently the foreign tourist influx may grow substantially in India in the coming years.

This tourist inflow will further increase due to the recent economic development going on in our country. At present we receive around 50 lakh foreign tourists, business travellers and cater to around 15 crore domestic tourists every year.

To keep pace with this unprecedented growth in tourism, the trained / qualified human resource is the need of the hour. A career in hospitality industry can be rewarding & challenging too, in comparison to some other professions.

It is a career option for the students, who love challenges, are innovative and dashing and love to mix with people, and above all want to go up in the hierarchy ladder fast. Career in hospitality industry is multifaceted, exciting, and highly remunerative as well.

Hotel Management is thriving in our country and the dynamic young generation is choosing their careers in this segment.

Career in hospitality industries offer wide range of jobs in different areas, like Marketing, Food & Beverages, Food Production, Housekeeping, Front Office, HRD, Finance, Management, Entertainment, etc.

Some Chefs like Sanjeev Kapoor, Jiggs Kalra, Hemant Oberoi, Imtiaz Quresi have been given much media attention. They have now become household names and enjoy national celebrity status.

They not only have glamour, but also get enviable amount of financial package from their employers. Trained students in Hospitality Management are also in great demand, in Airlines, Resorts, Restaurants, Shipping, Luxury Cruise liners and different Corporate Sectors, etc.

Moreover, this is one such profession that gives ample scope to start a lucrative own business set – up in this line.

There are different categories of Hospitality Management courses, right from short duration Certificate course and 3 Years Diploma to 4 Years Degree courses in Hotel & Catering Management.

While choosing the Institute / University for such course one should be careful in choosing the right place, because in career building no one should take chances.

The infrastructure, affiliation, quality of the faculties, past records, on the job training & placement facilities, etc. have to be assessed properly before choosing the right institute to pursue the course.

Diploma & Degree courses generally include minimum 24 weeks of on the job training in reputed star hotels. It is also very important to decide whether one should opt for Diploma or Degree Course.

Obviously, the Degree option is much better for two reasons :

  1. It’s a higher qualification.
  2. one can opt for MBA or other further higher specialisation.

Some institutes offer international diploma / degree, which helps to get job opportunities abroad.

The admission in Hotel & Catering Management Institute starts in June / July.

The eligibility criteria for the admission test for Diploma & Degree Courses are Class – XII passed or appeared. Group Discussion and Personal Interview follow the Written Test.

The cost of doing the course can vary, depending on the course structure & the name of the institution.

If one obtains Diploma / Degree from a reputed institution then placement becomes easy in good hotels and other related places.

The salary structure in the hospitality industry is reasonably good and Management Trainees generally get offers of remuneration ranging from Rupee 5,000 – Rupee 10,000 per month.

Therefore, if one is dynamic, enthusiastic and ready to ride on a fast moving career, a Career in Hospitality Management may be the right choice.
